Baltimore kids fencing classes

BMFA’s Youth Beginners classes now start on the first Wednesday of each month!

minimusketeers-300x225

Ages: 6-12

Starting Dates:  March 4, April 1 (NO FOOLING!), May 6, 2020

Requirements:   Come as you are! (Bring long sweatpants and a water bottle!)

Rather than keeping prospective young fencers pining for two whole months if distracted parents miss the sign-up for the previous 8-week introductory class, BMFA now has a rolling sign-up where “new” kids can start every month!

Stop buy to visit our regular youth classes at 6:30PM every Tuesday and Friday (just to see more experienced kids), or be our guest every Wednesday at 5:30PM just to get a feel for what this is all about. (Just let Coach Chris know before, so we can have enough gear at hand if the locating is changed to one of the Knott Hall gyms on short notice.)

We still have open slots for March, and you can sign up right here!

Once again, we have been moved to the Performance Gym at Knott Hall. Pressure’s on—and let Coach Chris know if you need stuff from our supply room.

2/21: Banished to the four-courts again!

Knee-joints rejoice, on 2/21, wer’e back again at the four-court gym!

Valentine’s Day 2/14/20: Head to the Performance Gym

Bring your best game to the Performance Gym in Knott Hall on Valentine’s Day afternoon and evening!

We’ve been ousted from Wheeler Hall for the night due to gangly youths dancing at our usual venue.

The upside: Wooden floors!

Frequently Asked Questions

Youth Beginners (ages 7-13)

Start: New classes start every FIRST WEDNESDAY of the month 5:30PM at Wheeler Hall, 500 Chestnut Avenue, Towson, MD 21204.

Students will build up agility and stamina in an age-appropriate but challenging class involving:

  • Stretch, Strength & Agility Exercises
  • Footwork
  • Bladework
  • Bouting

Coach Larbi Soufiane will introduce your child to the concepts of modern competitive fencing in a cooperative, kids-friendly atmosphere. Our program focuses on teaching the proper way to move (balanced advancing, retreating, lunging, acceleration units), using distance both for offense and defense, using the foil both to score on the opponent and to keep from getting scored on). At the end of the course, the students will get to experience fencing using the electric scoring apparatus.

The club provides all gear: masks, gloves, plastrons (a protective garment worn over the shoulder and armpit of the sword warm), and foils.

Our first Youth Beginners Class in 2020 will start on January 8, 2020, with new Groups starting every first Wednesday of the month!

Location: Wheeler Hall at Loyola Blakefield, 500 Chestnut Avenue, Towson MD 21204.

Also: If your BMFA has siblings or friends who always have been wanting lear to fence:

BMFA is starting its first Beginners Class of the new decade on Wednesday, January 8!

We mean it: BMFA holiday closings!

No classes or lessons or open bouting on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31!

(Please note the clever rendering of Christmas Day on our scoring machine!)

Holiday closings: Dec. 24 and 31, 2019

Fencing — or watch children happily dance around Christmas trees (or whatever holiday decorations you put up)…

Fencing — or clink glasses and graze opulent New Years Eve buffets with friends and family…

Tough choices, we know.

But sometimes, we have to make tough choices.

Accordingly, BMFA will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 24 (a.k.a., Christmas Eve) and Dec. 31 (a.k.a., New Year’s Eve.)

Put simply for our teenage members, such as Mr. Aidan “Captain Plum” Owens:

NO FENCING 12/24 and 12/24!
